Featured remodel: The Axtel
The Axtel project was not complicated, although it had some of the usual quirks that go along with having a condo on the mountain built in the 80s. None of the units had their own water shut-offs, so coordinating with HOA and homeowners was complicated. No washer or dryer in the unit seemed to be a deal-breaker when it came to short-term rentals, and the original fireplace could not be reworked as a direct result of neglect over the years and poor design when the building was erected. We also wanted to maintain a mountain modern feel with the durability needed to protect a slope-side short-term rental and a place where their family spent time in the summers.
We chose to use LVP, which is a vinyl product known for its durability. One of the pressing questions was: who would want to relax and enjoy their ski vacation without a fireplace? However, because of the chimney neglect, we were limited with options. To solve this problem, we decided to fabricate chimney boxes and wrap them with reclaimed Kentucky barn wood. Next, we installed electric fireplaces capable of heating a 500-square-foot room. We also decided to bring the same barn-wood look into the bedroom. Both bathrooms were completely redone with new steel enameled bathtubs and tile. New kitchen cabinets were installed over shiny new quartz countertops. The unit was repainted with high-quality satin paint for durability. All the doors and trim were painted with an enameled base paint for the density compared to other products. Reema and Rick were awesome to work with; they are both highly intelligent and completely open-minded when it comes to their slope-side renovation.
